MEDIEVAL ENGLISH PHILOLOGY I
Dra. María de

This course is designed as an introduction
to the earliest written records of the English language, written in a language
known as Old English or Anglo-Saxon. This period, divided in several
sub-periods, dates from the 5th c. and continues up to the11th c.
Later texts from the 11th c. to the 13th c. sometimes
include texts in Old English or related to them by means of glossaries. The
emphasis will be laid on helping the student get a first-hand knowledge of
language itself as preserved in the documents and literary works that have come
down to us, using a faithful edition of the primary sources in order to
understand the mentalities of those who wrote them and developed a more up to
date interpretation of the text from the extant evidence.
An
adequate command of both written and oral English will be required in order to follow
and pass this course.
Students will be
graded according to the quality and regularity of their course work and the
results of written tasks and tests. Appropriate use of language in exercises,
assignments and exams will be required. Serious deficiencies in that respect
will not grant a pass.
[Failure to attend classes
regularly (missing more than 30% of class time)
and/or the inability to hand in
written assignments at the required dates will result in special final written
and oral exams for those willing to pass the course]
