Welcome! Our Department, which was
established in 1963, is still one of the largest at the Universidad de La Laguna (ULL), on
the island of Tenerife.
We teach more than four thousand students who study either
English or German in many different Schools and Centers, such as
the School of Philology, the Education Center, the Business and
Administration Center, Medical Studies, Information Sciences and
Architecture.
This website provides general information about our university, and more detailed information about English studies in our Department. They include the following programs:
We also make suggestions about what to do after you finish your degree in English philology.
Students take core curriculum courses totalizing 60% of the credits required to complete the BA degree in English philology. To make up the remaining credits, students take elective courses, thus allowing them to major in either language or literary studies:
These two areas are not mutually exclusive and students may choose their subjects according to their interests. It should be noticed that all courses are taught in English unless otherwise specified.
Students participating in Socrates-Erasmus exchange programs should take note that we participate in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Students requiring information on elective courses taught elsewhere in the ULL should contact the Schools concerned or visit their web sites (see the links on the left).
Our program is selective. Applicants to the graduate program are expected to hold a (good, with an average notable, or B grade) BA degree in English or some other field related to the program's curriculum. Applicants should fill out a pre-registration form, furnishing the other documents specified therein, to be submitted by mid-September. Once a decision has been made by the Graduate Studies Committee of the School of Philology, successful applicants register at the Graduate School for the "Programa de Doctorado en Filología."
In accordance with the research interests of our faculty, the School of Philology offers courses on the following areas of English Studies: African-American studies, twentieth-century American cultural history, modern and contemporary American literature, Canadian studies, ELT methodology, Indian literature in English, language acquisition, Medieval and Early-modern English dialectology, Scottish literature, linguistic variation, and others. Although not currently involved in this program, other members of the Department have supervised and conducted research in areas such as interlanguage, literature and myth, and travel writing in English.
